Van lies on the shore of a large scenic lake of the same name in eastern Turkey. The city features an ancient citadel set atop a dramatic limestone outcrop, overlooking the atmospheric old town. Rapidly expanding and modernizing, Van is a warm and welcoming center for regional exploration. It is home to striking monuments such as Van Castle, the mountain fortress of Hoşap and the remote village of Bahçesaray, as well as the Church of the Holy Cross. The city is an engaging and liberal urban area in eastern Anatolia. It is also an important commercial and trans-portation center for animal hides, grains, fruits, vegetables and other local produce, both regionally and to neighboring countries, including Iran, Iraq and Armenia. Van also serves as an air and ground transport hub for the country’s southeastern cities, such as Bitlis, Hakkari, Siirt and Muş.
